Soaring energy, mortgage and council tax bills mean households have less and less to spend on groceries and other day-to-day expenses.
A study by the Citizens Advice Bureau
found that bills for essentials such as council tax, gas and electricity, water, landline telephones, home insurance and TV licences have risen to £3,426 a year for a typical household.
In total, the average household is paying £14,800 in bills a year - £6,000 more than five years ago.
A Citizens Advice Bureau report said the number of consumers reporting problems paying for gas and electricity rose by a third last year.
This has left many families on the brink of financial ruin as they struggle to meet the rising costs.
Concerns over council tax went up by 25 per cent and telephone debt problems by 19 per cent.
Families reporting problems with monthly mortgage payments and secured loans rose by 11 per cent.
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service, a debt advice charity, reported some on monthly debt management plans are missing payments because they are having to spend more on living costs.
